Top 10 Craziest Foods From Around The World

I have been to many places in the world and eaten some strange things.  So thought I would create a top 10 of the strangest foods from around the world.  Many of these you could not pay me enough to eat.  I am usually open to trying new foods, but I do have my limits.  So sit back or lean forward and check out some crazy foods people actually eat and enjoy!

10. Tuna Eyeballs - Japan
Fish is a tasty thing, but I am not sure I could ever eat an eyeball... Yuck!    They are typically prepared by boiling and then adding soy sauce, sugar and sake.  Although it is said to taste similar to squid or octopus which I have eaten.  Some say it taste like a hard boiled egg, hmmmm.... But I think I will pass on the eyeballs.

9. Century Egg – China
Now these eggs really aren't 100 years old, but they are old and rotten.  They are basically left for 3 months in a mixture of clay, ash and quicklime until they are rotted.  I have chickens and have found a rotten egg from time to time and let me tell you, I would not eat it!  I would probably rather eat mud.  At any rate some seem to love it and eat them like popcorn chicken.  No thank-you!

8. Jing Leed (Grasshoppers) – Thailand
Bugs are eaten all over the world, I have heard they taste like nuts.  I don't think I would like to find out.  So I will pass.  They are usually fried with seasoning and oils.  I'll stick to fried chicken...

7. Guinea Pig – South America
When I think guinea pig, I don't think medium or well done...  But for some they find it very appealing.  Now I have eaten possum tacos before, so not too much different perhaps.  I would probably try this. However don't go getting your pet guinea pig Fido and roasting him on the grill just yet...

6. Balut – Philippines
Another fowl (foul) thing to eat, is Balut.  It is a developed duck embryo in the egg, boiled alive and then eaten. I love eggs, especially boiled eggs, but this goes too far!  I'll pass!

5.  Casu Marzu – Italy
Who doesn't like maggots?  And especially in your cheese?!  Well people in Italy seem to think it is great.  The maggots supposedly enhance the flavor.  Some prefer to kill the maggots by putting it in the fridge before eating and others prefer to eat live wiggling maggot cheese.  Ummm, they can keep that cheese!

4. Drunken Shrimp – China
I like shrimp as much as the next guy, but not sure I would eat raw drunk shrimp.  In China they get shrimp drunk in liquor called baijiu and then serve them live.  People bite the heads off before eating them.  I think I'll stick to popcorn shrimp...

3. Dog – Korea
Now we as humans eat all kinds of meat, but some are just off limits and taboo in most parts of the world.  Dog is one of them, unless you are in Korea and even China and Veitnam.  Sir, please pass the dog roast please...

2. Hakarl - Iceland
This delight is basically rotten old shark that would otherwise kill you if you ate it.  It is made by taking the greenland shark and burying it for 3 months or so to allow the poisonous fluids to drain out.  Then hung to dry and cut into strips to eat.  I like jerky, but think I will stick to beef.

1. Fried Tarantula – Cambodia
I saved this one for last because nothing has the creep factor like spiders, especially the thought of eating one!  Well for some people in the world including Cambodia, they can't get enough of them.  I think I'll leave the spiders to the exterminators!

I am sure there are many other things in the world that people eat that would make my skin crawl, but I'll leave it at this top 10.  Bon Appetit!
