"Why Do" Wednesday - Why Do Women's Shirts Button Opposite Of Men's?

Image
If you are ever getting something off the clearance rack, chances are you may have accidentally bought a button up shirt from the opposite gender.  You can tell pretty quick because the buttons are on opposite sides for men and women.  Women's buttons are on the left side of a shirt while Men's are on the right.  So why is this the case?  Are all men right handed and all women left handed?  Absolutely not... But there is a reason or theory at least. So there isn't really proven fact as to why but the most accepted theory is that it is based on historical ways that women dressed. Buttons were invented around the 13th century and like any new technology were expensive.  Only the wealthy could afford clothing with these buttons.  On top of that, the wealthy women did not dress themselves. As said before not all women are lefties, nor men righties, but in general more people are right handed than left.  So for that reason these rich aristocrat ladies with their mai

Tasty Tuesday - Spooky White Chili Halloween Edition

Image
So this white chili is super easy to make and delicious!  It has just a few ingredients and is very little effort to make.  Basically you cook some chicken and mix some beans and seasoning in with it.  It is always a hit with my family! Ingredients: 3 Chicken breasts 2 qt chicken broth 2 cans garbanzo beans 2 cans kidney beans 2 cans pinto beans 1 cans black beans 1 cans red beans 1 medium onion (chopped) 3 garlic cloves (minced) 1/2 tbsp salt 1 tbsp Mrs Dash 2 rosemary stems Pepper to taste You will need at least a 6 qt crock-pot for this recipe.  Step 1 Cook The Chicken So first of you need to just cook the chicken in a crock-pot.  I like to just use some frozen chicken breast because its really easy to shred later.  With bone in chicken you will get more flavor but is a lot more work to pull the meat off.  So just put the chicken breasts in a crock-pot along with the chicken broth, onion, garlic and rosemary. Cook on medium for 3-4 hours or until it fal

Flashback Friday - 1881 Gunfight At The O.K. Corral

Image
I love the movie Tombstone that is based on this historical event.  Basically this was a 30 second gunfight that has gone down in history as one of the most famous of all time.  So what led up to this gunfight and why is it so famous? Tombstone the Movie 1993 Basically it all came down to a long standing feud between the outlaw group the Cowboys and the Earp brothers.  The Cowboys were stealing cattle and horses among other crimes and continually put death threats against the Earps for trying to interfere with their operations.  This continued to brew until the day of the infamous gun fight. Tombstone AZ Around 1881 At around 3:00 pm on Wednesday, October 26, 1881, in Tombstone, Arizona Territory the infamous outlaws called the cowboys faced off with the lawmen of Tombstone.  In the 30 second battle none of the lawmen were killed only wounded and 3 of the outlaws were killed (Tom and Frank McLaury and Billy Clanton). The Cowboys (outlaws) Billy Claiborne Ike Clan

Thankful Thursday - Fruit

Image
Now I know this seems like a simple lame thing to be thankful for, but could you imagine for a moment what the world would be like with no fruit?  There are so many kinds and flavors.  Some are simply amazing and others not so much. Fruit adds so much beauty and joy to life.  I really could not imagine never eating a piece of fruit again... So to show how thankful I am, here are some of my favorite fruits! Berries I love almost any kind of berry!  Raspberries for sure are my favorite though.  You can just eat them fresh or make some delicious pies or put them in ice-cream.  They are just delicious! Melon (Cantaloupe/Watermelon) I love me all the melons too!  Nothing can be more refreshing that some crispy, juicy, cold and sweet watermelon.  Or soft sweet cantaloupe with some salt (some may hate it, but I love it on melon!). Grapes Whether you are a green grape person or a red grape person, one thing is certain.  They are so tasty.  I like both, but prefer red gra

"Why Do" Wednesday - Why Do Soda Bottles Have Ridges On The Base?

Image
Man, I love me some cold soda! Ever wondered why the plastic soda bottles have those bumps/ridges on the base?  Is it just to make it look cool or is there some other reason?  Well RookieGuru is here for you to let you know! So why do they have these bumps?  Well, the short answer is to make the bottle stronger.  First thing is that this portion of the bottle is usually a bit thicker too.  But forming that shape makes the base more rigid and strong.  It is the same concept used for corrugated roofing.  Bending any material increases its strength and rigidity. These ridges are not only for the standing stability of the bottle, but keep the bottles from deforming under pressure. Since soda cans are under some decent pressure, especially if they are shook up, these ridges keep the bottle from bulging at the bottom.  This would not be so good for standing up! A plastic soda bottle can withstand anywhere from 80 PSI all the way up to even 250 PSI depending on temperature

Tasty Tuesday - Try These Tasty Home Made Egg Noodles

Image
If you love noodles, you will love these home made egg noodles and best of all, they are pretty easy to make.  You can add them to any soup, but for me I love to make a chicken noodle gravy and put them over mashed potatoes, an old family tradition. So how do you make these bad boys?  Very simple... Ingredients: 4 Eggs 3-4 Cups of Flower 1 tbsp Salt Tools Needed: Mixer Pizza Cutter Noodle Cutter Steps 1. Mix the dough First step is to crack your eggs into your mixing bowl.  I like to use a Kitchen Aid mixer, but any stand mixer will work.  You can mix by hand, but is quite tiring.  I like to use duck eggs from my ducks, but any eggs will work.  You can see below they are much bigger plus I like the richness. Next add some Salt, about 1 tbsp... Now you can start mixing and slowly add in the flower.  This part is kind of a science but not too complicated.  It is typically about 3/4 cup per egg, but since not all eggs are created equal,

Fun Day Monday - If You Could Be A Super Hero, Which One Would You Be?

Image
Growing up I always loved super hero shows and movies.  Back then there were the classics like Batman and Superman.  Well in recent years, the super hero movie train has been going full bore!  The rivalry between DC and Marvel is a battle of the super heroes in it's own right.  As much as I enjoy the Marvel movies more than DC, I have to say, they are all pretty fantastic.  They have taken super heroes to the next level with all the movies and TV Shows. So which would I be?  Well, to me the best super hero of all time is Superman.  I have this debate with one of my sons quite often about who is better; Superman or Batman...?  He loves Batman and we have a good back and forth about it.  But I always win because Superman has powers and Batman doesn't... lol So why would I choose Superman?  Well the better question is why wouldn't I?  Let's just summarize his powers... 1. He's bullet proof!  Even a bullet to the eye... 2. He can fly.  Need I say mo

Flashback Friday - 1980 Steve McPeak rides 101'9" unicycle

Image
Oh the unicycle... Famed transportation of clowns, but ridden by those who can.  I have always wanted to try one, but I am not the most coordinate person, so haven't yet.  But maybe someday.  Well a dude named Steve McPeak loved them and in 1980 he rode a 101 almost 102 foot tall unicycle at the Las Vegas Hilton to set the world record. The unicycle used by McPeak weighed in over 1,400 pounds and he had to be lifted onto it by a crane. So lets give a shout out to this daredevil who rode that insane towering death trap 38 years ago today!  Marking himself his place in history. #RookieGuru #GiveMeMore

Thankful Thursday - Garbage Collection

Image
Now every single one of us humans creates garbage, from old couches to candy wrappers, it can start to pile up!  Recycling can help and reduce some waste, but we can't avoid throwing things away.  So I am thankful there are people who will drive around and pick that stuff up!  I myself have a dumpster and the dude comes once a week to empty it.  Can you imagine if we had no where to get rid of our garbage?  Our homes and yards would start to fill up and get pretty nasty! Not only does this job probably suck, but is is downright dangerous.  And depending where it is can make things worse! "Statistics show that waste collection is one of the most dangerous jobs, at times more dangerous than police work, but consistently less dangerous than commercial fishing and ranch and farm work. On-the-job hazards include broken glass, medical waste such as syringes, caustic chemicals, falling objects from overloaded containers, diseases that may accompany solid waste, asbestos, dog a

"Why Do" Wednesday - Why Do Electronics Cables Have Those Bulge Things?

Image
Ok, this is going to get a bit scientific for a bit, but will try to keep it on the down low!  So first of all these little bulges are called Ferrite Beads.  They are basically a hollow cylinder made out of an iron composite material (iron, manganese and zinc)...  They are found on most electronics cables. This is what they look like inside the plastic mold... So why do cables need these on there? Well, the answer is they are a filter.  There are two reasons to have them.  The first is to keep electronic noise from radiating into other devices or the air.  The second is to keep radiated noise from getting into your device.  So what does that all mean?  Think of it this way...   If you go out on a sunny day and it is too strong for your eyes, you put on a pair of sunglasses.  This essentially blocks certain parts of light and make it easier on your eyes.   Now even though this isn't the same thing, it can give you an idea of why they are needed.  All around u
